How to Choose the Right Black Luggage

Check the shell material

All three sets feature softside construction. This means the exterior is made from flexible fabric rather than rigid plastic or aluminum. Softside luggage typically offers more expandability and can fit into tighter spaces. You can squeeze extra items into the bag when the zipper allows. The fabric also absorbs impact better than hard shells. If you prefer a structured shape that holds its form, this softside design might feel less rigid. However, the flexibility is useful for maximizing packing space during short trips.

Verify wheel type

Every option on this list uses spinner wheels. These wheels rotate 360 degrees, allowing you to pull the luggage alongside you rather than behind you. This design improves maneuverability in crowded airports or narrow aisles. You can push the bag with one hand while holding your boarding pass. Spinner wheels reduce strain on your shoulder and arm. This feature is standard across the Maxlite 5 and Tourlite sets. It ensures smooth rolling regardless of which side of the bag is facing forward during your journey.

Assess piece count

Select the number of bags based on your travel frequency. The Maxlite 5 comes in a 2-piece set, ideal for couples or solo travelers who need a carry-on and a tote. The Tourlite offers a 3-piece set, providing two checked bags and a carry-on. More pieces mean more storage capacity but also more items to manage. If you only take short trips, two bags may suffice. Long-term travelers might prefer the third bag for organized packing. Match the piece count to your typical trip duration.

Review weight limits

Luggage weight directly impacts your packing allowance. The Maxlite 5 21-inch carry-on weighs 9 pounds. The larger 25-inch bag in the same line weighs only 5.4 pounds. Lighter bags allow you to pack more clothes without exceeding airline weight restrictions. Heavier luggage consumes your weight budget faster. Check the specific weight of each bag in your chosen set. Prioritize lighter models if you fly with strict weight limits. This helps you avoid extra fees at the check-in counter.

Confirm size dimensions

Measure the height, width, and length to ensure fit. The 21-inch carry-on measures 21 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. This size fits under most airplane seats. The checked bags offer larger dimensions, with the largest reaching 29.3 inches in height. Verify these measurements against your airline’s size restrictions. Oversized bags may incur additional fees. The compact dimensions of the carry-on make it suitable for underseat storage. Larger bags are designed for overhead bins or checked luggage compartments.

The Travelpro Tourlite 3-Piece Softside Set contains three separate bags. The sizes included are 21, 25, and 29 inches.
