How to choose the right one
Check the shell material
Softside shells offer flexibility and often weigh less. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 set uses a softside design, making it easier to squeeze into tight overhead bins. Hardside options like the Pathways 3 provide rigid polycarbonate protection. This material resists scratches and impacts better than fabric. Choose softside if you need extra packing room through expansion. Select hardside if you prioritize durable, scratch-resistant protection for your belongings during transit.
Compare spinner and two-wheel designs
Spinner wheels allow 360-degree movement for easy navigation through crowded airports. Most picks here feature spinner wheels for smooth maneuvering. The Travelpro Bold set uses a two-wheel design instead. You must tilt this bag to roll it, which requires more effort. Spinners are ideal for travelers who want effortless mobility. Two-wheel designs can be more durable on rough surfaces. Pick spinners for convenience and two-wheelers for rugged terrain handling.
Evaluate expandable capacity needs
Expandable features add extra packing space when you need it. The Maxlite 5 set includes this function for short trips where you might buy souvenirs. The Tourlite set also offers expansion for longer journeys. If you pack light, fixed capacity is sufficient. Expansion adds weight and complexity to the zipper system. Check if the expanded dimensions still fit airline carry-on limits. Use this feature only when you need flexible storage for unexpected items.
Assess weight for mobility
Lighter bags reduce strain on your shoulders and wrists. The Maxlite 5 Softside weighs just 5.4 pounds, making it very easy to lift. The heavier Platinum Elite set weighs 17.6 pounds due to additional features. Heavier hardside models like the Pathways 3 weigh 18.2 pounds. Lower weight is crucial for carry-on bags to stay under airline limits. Compare the total weight of the set to ensure you can handle it comfortably.
Look for USB charging ports
Some sets include built-in USB ports for device charging. The Platinum Elite set features this convenience for travelers on the go. You still need to bring your own power bank. This feature is rare in lighter, budget-friendly models. If you travel frequently with electronics, a charging port adds value. It keeps your devices powered without needing external adapters. Check compatibility with your preferred charging cables before relying on this feature.
